Get to know Sitges
Sitges is a town of 30,000 inhabitants on the Catalan coast, south of Barcelona. It bases its economy on tourism and culture.
The climate of Sitges is pleasant all year round and high quality tourist infrastructure. Between hotels and holiday apartments it has about 4500 beds.
It receives visitors throughout the year because many companies choose Sitges as a place to hold meetings, encounters or courses or as a base for their employees to work at the congresses held in Barcelona. In recent years many freelancers have settled in Sitges.
The cultural events that take place throughout the year also attract many visitors. Film festivals, dance competitions, shows or exhibitions always ensure that there are always visitors.
Our rental apartments in Sitges are a good option to enjoy the best town on the Catalan coast at your leisure.
Nowhere else will you find such a rich historical and artistic legacy with a first-rate tourist infrastructure. In Sitges they organize internationally renowned events: here they hold car rallies, an international horror film festival, the most rampant carnival on the Catalan coast, the Sitges Gay Pride parade or the acts of the Fiesta Mayor.
The cultural offer is wide and covers the whole year. Despite being a small town, it has six museums and nine art galleries. Events and exhibitions of all kinds are continually organized.
Brief history of Sitges
Until the 19th century, Sitges was a coastal town like so many others. The main economic activities were the countryside, fishing and trade through the port.
From the 19th century, a period of economic growth began that continues to this day.
The arrival of the train at the end of the 19th century changed Sitges forever. The Noucentista, Modernista and Bohemian artists arrived from Barcelona, placing it as a Catalan cultural reference.
The indianos (rich merchants returning from the Spanish colonies) endowed the town with colonial-style houses and palaces that remain today.
The Indians were interested in culture and were patrons of the artists. These created a cultural microclimate regardless of what was happening in Barcelona.
The entire economy began to revolve around these people’s businesses. They created industry and commerce and made Sitges a prosperous place. It is estimated that in the 30s there were more than 30 factories that employed almost the entire town.
The economic strength was so great that in 1923 they built a car racing circuit (Autódromo de Terramar) and a golf club in 1927.

To see in Sitges
- Old town: this is where our rental apartments are located in Sitges. These are narrow streets with low houses typical of the coastal towns. What differentiates it from other towns is that next to the white fishermen’s houses there are large noucentista houses with modernist details. A unique aesthetic combination that you will only find in Sitges.
- Palacio Maricel: it is one of these special houses that are located in the historic center of Sitges. It is a nineteenth-century style palace from the early twentieth century. Next to it there is the Maricel Museum where we can see a collection of typical Sitges art.
- Can Llopis Romantic Museum: it is another neoclassical building from the end of the 19th century that houses a museum that explains what daily life was like in Sitges before the 19th century.
- Cau Ferrat Museum: it is the house-workshop of the painter and writer Santiago Rusiñol. In 1933, two years after his death, the museum was created to display the artist’s works.
- Sant Sebastià beach: it is the beach that is in the center of the town, between the church of Sant Bartomeu and the wall. From our rental apartments in Sitges you can walk to the most photographed beach in Sitges.
- Casa Bacardi: it is a modernist building located a few meters from our tourist apartments. It is the home of Facundo Bacardí, the Indian creator of Bacardi rum. There they explain the history of this illustrious citizen of Sitges and how they make the drink.
On the Passeig Marítim there is a statue as a tribute to the most universal Indian of Sitges.
